Thomas Gordon
Basler
Mar 8, 1940 — Nov 15, 2024
Dr. Thomas G. Basler died peacefully, age 84, at Roper St. Francis hospital.
Thomas Basler is survived by Samille Basler (his wife of 38 years), six children, twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and his brother Donald Basler. He was born to Gordon and Bertha Basler in Cleveland, Ohio.
He began his professional life as a Field Biologist in the wilderness of the Everglades – with the snakes, and birds, and alligators. Sidetracked into the wilderness of the written word, he has been blessed by the institutions he served as library director: University of Miami School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (now Rosenstiel), The American Museum of Natural History, NY Academy of Medicine, Medical College of Georgia, and the Medical University of South Carolina. Even more blessed by his colleagues at each place. Thirteen of whom went on to become library directors.
His joys in life were his family, career, gardening, and wildlife most especially here in South Carolina but also among some far flung locales. He was an avid fan of The Cleveland Browns!
Those who knew him will understand that at Tom's request, there is to be no funeral or graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to St Jude's or a charity of your choosing.
