Obituary

We are sorry to announce the passing of Sandra Leigh Walker Rund.

Sandra Leigh Rund (nee Walker), 78, of Mount Pleasant, passed away on July 29th, 2024 after a brief illness.

Sandra was born on James Island on September 14th, 1945, to Jimerson Luken Walker and Ruth Noel Walker. She attended James Island High School and graduated from the nursing program at the Medical University of South Carolina.

For a brief period, Sandra served as a flight attendant with Seaboard Airlines ferrying troops to Vietnam at the height of the war there. On one of her more memorable trips, she was forced to take cover in a bunker at the Cam Ranh military airport to avoid an enemy mortar attack.

Sandra later worked as a Registered Nurse in California where she met and married her husband Chuck who had just returned from his Army tour in Vietnam. They then embarked on a life overseas following Chuck's banking career, in Uruguay, Brazil (twice), Connecticut, Aruba, the Cayman Islands, the Netherlands, and finally Weston, Florida. They eventually retired in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Sandra was a voracious reader and lover of animals. When not working she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Humane Society, two organizations near to her heart. She possessed a sharp mind and an endearingly silly sense of humor that brought light to many. She was exceedingly kind and nurturing by nature. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends.

Sandra was preceded in death by her father Jimerson, her mother Ruth, her brother Sterling Walker of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and her daughter Ashley Rund Gibson of Fort Myers, Florida.

Sandra is survived by her husband Chuck Rund, her sons Jonathan Rund and Bryan Rund, her grandchildren Eli Rund, Jacob Gibson, Eliza Rund, Oliver Rund, and Andrew Rund, and her brother Bill Walker of Walterboro, South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Charleston Animal Society.
