Samuel Franklin Robinson, Jr., 82, of Charleston, SC, passed away on April 5, 2025.

Sam was born on June 14, 1942, to Samuel Franklin Robinson, Sr. and Lavenia Fuller Robinson in Winston-Salem, NC. After graduating from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1960, he went on to study Political Science at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. While attending The Citadel, he played freshman football, served as head cheerleader, and was selected as a Summerall Guard-one of the highest honors at the military college. After graduating with the Class of 1964, Sam was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During his tenure, he rose to the rank of Captain and completed two combat tours of duty in Vietnam. He served in the command structure of the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment within USARV. Sam also completed Airborne School and Ranger School, earning elite status as an Army Ranger. He was a brave hero for his beloved country and a decorated leader in his unit. Sam was awarded many commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Parachute Badge, Air Medal, four Overseas Bars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Ranger Tab, Meritorious Unit Citation (AF Level), Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

After his honorable discharge from military service, Sam worked in the insurance industry for over 40 years-beginning in New York, then Georgia, and predominantly in Tennessee. He specialized in the mining sector and retired in 2002 from his position as Senior Vice President of Marsh McLennan.

A devoted Christian, Sam was deeply committed to his faith. He served as a vestry member at St. Philip's Anglican Church in Charleston and also on the Missions Board as a representative for Water Mission. He took multiple mission trips to Haiti, was a member of a men's Bible study at St. Philip's, and served as a men's group leader in Bible Study Fellowship for over 40 years.

Sam was an avid outdoorsman who seized every opportunity to hunt whatever was in season. He was also a gifted fly fisherman, a master oyster roaster for family and friends, and took pride in the landscaping around his home. An expert skier, Sam even convinced his wife, Carol, to join him as a ski instructor at Beech Mountain Ski Resort in North Carolina.

A fierce patriot and proud Citadel alumnus, Sam remained a strong supporter of the institution throughout his life, hosting alumni events for his classmates and actively supporting St. Alban's Anglican Chapel on campus.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lavenia Fuller Robinson; his father, Samuel Franklin Robinson, Sr.; and his beloved hunting companions, Shadow and Boomer. He is survived by his cherished wife, Carol Swedish Robinson; his daughter, Jennifer Robinson Jenkins (Chad); his granddaughters, Adelaide Ann Jenkins and Carson Emma Jenkins; his sister, Nancy Lynn Robinson; his nephew, Samuel Troy Robinson; a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends whom he considered family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on April 24, 2025, at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 142 Church St., Charleston, South Carolina. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Sam's inurnment will be held privately at the Memorial Bell Tower Columbarium on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston.
