John Edward Heidtman, Jr (Jack), a local Charleston artist, passed away in February, 2025 in Hanahan, South Carolina. He was 81 years old.

Jack, a third generation Charlestonian, was born to Camille West Heidtman and Yohan (John) E. Heidtmann at St Francis hospital on August 28th, 1943.

Jack grew up in the Dorchester Terrace neighborhood of North Charleston. He graduated from Chicora High School and studied Mechanical Engineering at University of South Carolina.

His career in art and design began as a marine illustrator for Duke University until returning to Charleston to open Custom Home Plans. He designed custom homes and homes built in many subdivisions in the 1970's. He was likewise the founder of West Boat Company, the fruition of a lifelong interest in boats, design, and water life.

In his retirement, he studied for many years to become a watercolor artist painting what he knew best, old Charleston, its people and ways. He earned a coveted spot at the Charleston Historic Market where he sold signed, limited editions of his giclee prints for many years.

He was also a member of the Charleston Artist Guild as well as the South Carolina Watercolor Society. His unique perspective as a native Charleston artist will endure through his watercolors.

Jack is survived by his daughter Chana K Heidtman, RN, three grandchildren Tim Barry, RN (Jenna Martinez), Camille Quach (Joe Porter), and Jon Quach, and cousin Carol Roberts. Of special note is Elizabeth with whom Jack shared a warm and close friendship in his final years.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Camille and John Heidtmann as well as beloved aunts Helen Heidtmann and Johanna Heidtmann-Roberts, and uncle Ernest Heidtmann, and members of the West family, all of Charleston.

A memorial is planned for a later date for family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to The Charleston Art Guild.
