Obituary

Jessie (Jay) Thorwarth Barmore, 97, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

Jay was born on April 13, 1926, the daughter of the late Mae Theimer Thorwarth and the late Fredrick Thorwarth.

Jay grew up the only child of a loving family in Elizabeth, NJ, and later in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. She was always surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. She graduated from Virginia Intermont College in 1944 and The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (LIM) in NYC in 1946. She worked as a merchandiser at Vogels Department Store in Long Branch, NJ, as an "All About Girl" at The Newark Times, and as a journalist at The Brielle Times.

In 1948, Jay married Franklyn Emerson Barmore and lovingly raised two beautiful daughters together, Roslyn (Lyn) and Diane (Livia). Jay joined Frank in the family business, The Shrimp Box, when it was only a small shop based out of the family's fishing dock (Barmore's Dock) net house. Together with Frank, her mother-in-law Edith, Lyn, and Diane, they grew the tiny net house into a 300-seat destination restaurant.

Jay was a great storyteller and would bring forgotten memories and long-gone family members back to life with her tales. She enjoyed many things in life, including drawing, painting, and traveling, but none were more dear to her than her family and spending time with her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandsons.

She was a beloved wife and a wonderful mother, a caring grandmother, a kind great-grandmother, a fun-loving friend, and a dear mother figure to any who needed maternal love. Jay lived a full life filled with love and joy, surrounded by her family.

Jay is preceded in death by her father, Fredrick Thorwarth; her mother, Mae Theimer Thorwarth; her husband, Franklyn Emerson Barmore; her daughters, Roslyn (Lyn) Vogel and Diane "Livia" Heckendorn; and her son-in-law, Ed Heckendorn.

Jay is survived by her son-in-law, Edward Vogel (Ed); her grandson, Edward Vogel, Jr. (Jay); her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Jennifer (Jennie) Vogel Garris and Eric Garris; and their sons Emerson, Jacob, Tymer and Cooper Garris, all of Mount Pleasant.
