With deep sadness, we share the passing of Barbara Louise Harmony , who left us unexpectedly on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at her home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Barbara was the heart of our family, steady, loving, hardworking, and full of strength. Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Anna and George Berard, Barbara grew into a woman defined by resilience, compassion, and a deep sense of fairness. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Joe Harmony, her partner in life and in every adventure they shared.

Barbara is survived by her children, Lisa Doherty Watt (and her husband Stephen) of Winchester, Massachusetts, and Garrett Doherty (and his wife Kay) of Seattle, Washington. Her four grandchildren, Ian and Jamie Watt, and Sage and Luna Doherty, were a source of constant pride and joy. She loved being their Grandma and never missed a chance to support them, connect with them, celebrate them, or show up for them in every way she could.

She is also survived by her sisters, Kate MacRitchie (with Bruce) and Lynn O'Neal (with Charlie), her nephew Ian, her niece Kathryn, and a large extended family, including Joe's son, Matt Harmony, his wife Diane, and their sons Logen, Ethan, and Peyton.

A Life Built on Strength and Determination

Barbara's life was shaped by her incredible perseverance. As a young single mother living in Rockport, Massachusetts, she worked two jobs to support her family while attending night school to build a better future. Her determination guided her through long days and late nights, always moving forward with a clear sense of purpose. Earning her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northeastern University was one of her proudest milestones, a hard-won accomplishment that reflected her strength, discipline, and unwavering belief in providing the best life she could for her children.

Barbara brought that same dedication to her work as an accountant throughout her career, including positions at Wang, Rose's Marina, Saucony, Johnny Appleseed's, and, most recently, the Mount Pleasant Waterworks. She was admired not only for her professionalism but for her warmth, honesty, and generosity.

Her Values

Barbara believed deeply in treating others with respect. She lived by the idea that kindness, dignity, and fairness mattered in every interaction. These values shaped the way she raised her children, connected with her community, and built relationships throughout her life.

What Brought Her Joy

After meeting Joe Harmony, Joe and Barbara married in 2003 and soon after, moved from Massachusetts to South Carolina. Barbara loved fashion, good food, and discovering new places. Shopping brought her genuine joy, and she always had a keen eye for style. She loved cooking the recipes her family requested most, but she also treasured evenings out trying new restaurants with Joe.

Travel was one of their shared passions. Together, they explored many places by cruise ship, building memories that became some of her happiest. Scotland held a special place in her heart, thanks to her son-in-law Stephen; she developed a love for fine scotch, and memories from Lisa and Stephen's wedding trip to the Isle of Arran remained especially dear. Watching "Outlander" became a way of revisiting that connection.

At home, the walls and shelves were decorated with photographs of her grandchildren, pictures she treasured and proudly displayed. Their faces brought her joy every day and reminded her of the love and accomplishments she held closest to her heart.

She also loved her daily walks with Joe at the Park West Recreation Track or the Mount Pleasant Fishing Pier. These routines brought her peace, grounding, and a sense of community.

Family Above Everything

Barbara was cremated at the Charleston Cremation Center on May 20. A memorial service will be held at a later date, when family and friends can gather to honor her life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lowcountry Food Bank in Charleston.
